Pet passports

If you?re going to bring your pet over to Spain from the UK, you must apply for an EU Pet Passport. In order for your cat or dog to qualify for one of these, you must make sure you carry out the following procedures in this order:

  • You must get your pet micro-chipped in order to identified if they go missing
  • Your pet must have a vaccination against rabies
  • A test must then be carried out to check for immunity to rabies (optional)
  • If everything is fine, your vet will issue you an EU pet passport
  • The vet will carry out a health check and issue you with a certificate which states that the animal fit to travel
  • After the day of the rabies vaccination, you must wait 21 days before your pet can travel to Spain or other EU countries.

Spain and other European countries abide by ISO (International Standards Organisation) regulations regarding your pet?s microchip. It must meet the specifications 1184 or Annex A of ISO Standard 11785. If it does not meet either of these ISO standards, you will have to provide your own microchip reader in order for the microchip to be read upon arrival in Spain or other countries in the EU.

Your pet must be at least 3 months old before it is vaccinated against rabies. If your pet was vaccinated against rabies before it was fitted with a microchip, it will need to be vaccinated again to make sure your pet is identified correctly at the time of vaccination.
