Gardening Q & A

Growing concerns

Let Lifetimes solve your planting problems and digging dilemmas in Spain!

?

Q: Can I bring my English country garden to Spain?

Mrs. Potter, Nueva Andaluc?a

A: This is a question many British expats ask when they move to Spain. To create an almost exact replica of the garden you left behind back in the UK (with its straight paths, neat green lawn and designated flower beds) is virtually impossible, due to Spain?s hot, arid climate.

Instead, try to visualise your ideal tropical garden or visit your local garden centre for inspiration.

Q: I want to be able to grow the ingredients for a tasty fresh salad in the summer but which foods am I able to grow here in Spain?

T. Sugden, Guadalmina

A: Luckily, there are hundreds of salad ingredients which grow successfully in Spain. Here are just a few of them:

Salad leaves: rocket, lambs lettuce, water cress, parsley, radish, mint and basil

Stems: celery, chives, asparagus, garlic and fennel

Sprouted seeds: chickpeas, beetroot, onion, lentils and pumpkin

Roots: onions, garlic, carrots and new potatoes

Herbs: basil, dill, oregano and coriander

?

Q: I enjoy eating fruit and since I have my own garden, think it would be economical to grow my own. However I?ve no idea what I can grow in this country. Please can you help me out!

Mrs. H Bolton, Las Chapas

A: Fruits grow extremely well in the souths hot, dry and very often humid temperatures, therefore you can choose from a very wide variety. Here are a few of the most popular fruits:

????????? Oranges

????????? Lemons

????????? Apricots

????????? Pomegranates

????????? Apples

????????? Peppers

????????? Pears

????????? Melon

????????? Mango
